What is BMX?

The sport of bicycle motocross began in the early 1970's in southern California . A handful of riders started riding their stingray type bikes off road in vacant lots and fields. Not much competition but a lot of fun.

Today the sport of bicycle motocross is sweeping the country and the world. There are over a 150,000 riders of all ages racing in organized races at permanent tracks across North America . BMX racing is clean, exciting fun that whole families can get involved in whether as a racer, spectator, pit crew or track volunteer.

Bmx has something to offer everyone.

Races are organized according to age group and skill levels, so everyone gets the opportunity to compete on a fair and competitive basis. Even beginner riders have the chance to race safely and competitively with other new riders.

All riders compete for awards and ABA (American Bicycle Association) points. The ABA points system determines a rider's annual ranking within that rider's district, which in our case is the province of BC minus Vancouver Island . Points are published in the “BMXer” magazine which each member receives monthly. We also keep the points updated on our own website, as well as the Supertrak local track points, Provincial and Canadian National points. There a rider can check and compare his/her point standings with other riders in their own city, district and across the country.

Who can race?

Races are organized into separate girls and boys classes then subdivided into age groups and skill levels. The age groups range from 5 and under to 51 and over classes. Within these age groups are three skill levels: novice, intermediate and expert. All riders start as novice and work up to the more advanced levels by winning races. At our track we even have 1/2 trackers, who are the wee little ones that still ride a tricycle or a bike with training wheels and only race on the last 1/2 of the track. Mind you it does not take long before they drop the training wheels and want to race the whole track.

What kind of bike do I need?

BMX racing does not require a lot of expensive equipment. Most racers start with their 20” street bike by removing the chain guard and kickstand and putting some inexpensive padding on the frame, handle bar and stem. Foam pipe insulation works great and is cheap too. Checkout the bike / equipment fit chart.

What other equipment do I need?

Number one, a helmet is mandatory, we recommend a full-face helmet and we do have a few loaners for those riders starting out. These helmets are on a first come first serve basis and sizes are limited. You also need to wear a long sleeved shirt (jersey etc.) long pants and enclosed shoes.

Where can I race?

The ABA has over 250 tracks in Canada and the US not to mention right here is Prince George! Our track is located in Carrie Jane Gray Park on Massey drive, directly across from Massey Place stadium and in behind the YMCA. We race twice a week from April through to the end of September.

How much does it cost to race?

The ABA offers a 30 day (one month) trial license for $35 which entitles you to race at our track and provides you with medical insurance coverage. A one year licence (full 12 months) costs $55 and allows you to race on any ABA track in North America. With the one year licence you will also receive the monthly “BMXer” magazine and qualify to earn district points. Once you purchase a licence, the only other cost will be the race day entrance fee ($5 for single point races) or you may purchase a season pass for $150 and waive all single point race fees at our track. Package deals will also be made up for those individuals that would like to get a deal on purchasing a track jersey, licence and seasons pass together.

How can I get started?

Just come down to the track during practice or race times and ask one of our friendly volunteers for some information, you can watch the races (spectators are always free) and talk to the other BMX families. But if you would prefer you are more than welcome to contact anyone of our executives either by e-mail or phone. Addresses and numbers are listed on the how to contact us page of this website
